Eric9799 Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Hi I’ve found some fragile plant fossils that I want to preserve. It’s both imprints and carbon residue that are extremely fragile. Some of the stones are fragile enough to break just from picking them up. I’ve been looking over at using Paraloid® B 72, butvar b76 or Polyvinyl Acetate PVAC30. Do any of you have any recommendations? I want to preserve both the max amount of detail and the carbon if possible. Also if anyone knows about preservatives that could be used in the field I would be grateful. My method right now for keeping it safe on the way home is wrapping it in foil.some carbon that fell off.
Ludwigia Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I've used artists fixative spray for pencil drawings in the past and it did a good job on some sensitive plant fossils. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

Thanks! That’ll probably work great in the field. Do you have any recommendations for stabilizing the rest of the stone?

Had to make a few coats. 1 Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

Randyw Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 I use paraloid b-72 on all my fragile fossils. I do not believe it works on wet though but dont know for sure as ive never tried it on wet..

I think it’s the same as butvar b76 that leave’s a white residue if used on a wet or even not completely dried surface. but thanks tho! Worst case I’ll just have be careful bringing it have and then drying before stabilizing
Ptychodus04 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Primal WS-24 is what the AMNH uses to consolidate wet specimens. I haven't used it personally. 1 Regards, Kris Global Paleo Services, LLC https://globalpaleoservices.com http://instagram.com/globalpaleoservices http://instagram.com/kris.howe
