Hi all,

Just wanted to share a couple of sculptures I did a few years back as a present. They are made of clay and wiring, and they try to represent the real-life owners of the fossil shell pieces. The real fossil pieces are detachable so they effectively work as a fossil stand.

Note that with what I know now about ammonites I would have changed a few things like the hood (vs aptychi), and lengthening and enlarging the part of the shell where the body goes in.

Hope it's interesting. Feedback is welcome!

What do you do to make the fossil pieces detachable? I can see it on the larger model, but the smaller one seems like it would become detached easily and fall off. They look great though!

They are press-fits aided by the elasticity of the paint, so they stay put!

I like how it looks! I am gonna have to keep this in mind for some of my more common partial invertebrate fossils.

Very well done.  At first I thought... why black?  Then I got to liking it.... it really makes the fossil bits stand out.
