Atoothsatooth42 Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 (edited) Hello again! Finally got to hit up the old Paleocene spot again after my dabble in the Miocene world. It was certainly refreshing! It was quite crowded as the day went on, but I was lucky enough to get there just early enough to have a head start. A cool, calm day turned cold and windy rather quickly as well. But the tide was great, as so were the finds! Numerous nice sized Sand Tigers were found, along with a super nice Cretalamna, and a solid smattering of broketodus (broken Otodus) throughout the day. I was unable to find a complete Otodus, but a broketodus is better than no-todus! The numbers were as good as they have been in a while as well. Very pleased with how the day turned out. We will see if I come back to the Paleocene to stay, or throw some more shots in the Miocene direction. Happy hunting! Edited December 2, 2024 by Atoothsatooth42 5

dsaavedra Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Great finds, I love the in-situ shots. I visited an Aquia site (possibly the same one?) the day after Thanksgiving and did not do nearly as well. I don't spend as much time at those sites as I do at Calvert sites and it always takes me a bit of adjusting when I switch. 1

I was fortunate to get there JUST before most people started showing up. I was at Purse. I agree funnily enough, the Calvert sites and Potomac sites have mostly different gravel/shell compositions lining the beaches, so they do feel like they require different frames of mind. Which Calvert sites do you typically frequent if I may ask? I’ve been giving Matoaka some pretty solid looks lately and it’s been pretty good overall.

It is much more pebbly than the Calvert sites, it always takes me some getting used to. I'd go there more often but a) Calvert is much closer to my home, and b) I prefer the diversity of Miocene finds. I hunt Calvert sites by boat so I just pull up to whichever section of cliffs I feel like exploring at a given time. I mostly explore the northern portion of the cliffs but I recently upgraded my boat and would like to venture further south now. 1
newb Posted December 9, 2024 Posted December 9, 2024 Man i should get out to Purse one of these days… 1
automech Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I've found weekdays are best for Purse. Kids are in school, and, older folks are at work. 1
newb Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 See tragically I am a working stiff who does not generally have a lot of free time on weekdays and a habit of prioritizing places I can go with a modest time commitment. Especially since i hate driving and don’t really trust my rust bucket prius.
newb Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 Well prioritizing places I can go with a modest time commitment for weekday trips.
automech Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 I hear you. Though, that's what vacation/sick days are for! Fortunately, for me, my employer has the fossil addiction also. 1
