I have found a few of these during my backyard digs. Your thoughts on what they are would be much appreciated. I would like to know if they are fossils, or imprints of a fossil. I realize I may not be wording my questions properly. Please forgive my ignorance. I am here to learn and share. Thank you for your time and patience.

Looks like an imprint of a fossil bivalve shell, something like a scallop, but because it isn't complete it could also be a brachiopod.

Thank you! How would I learn the possible time period of the imprint? Is that type question allowed? I’m asking because I’m trying to figure out if the things I’m finding here are unusual for this area. I will try to post more of them.
I am technologically challenged and learning to post things has been difficult. The internet issues in my area are also very frustrating.

I'm not familiar with the area but, just doing a quick search, it looks like the stratigraphy is over 400 million years old.  Bivalves, brachiopods, and crinoids are all common.  Hopefully someone more familiar with the area can chime in.  You can find a lot just by searching "Rochester NY stratigraphy".

The Rochester area largely dates back to the Silurian Period.

Because your fossil is incomplete, it is difficult to identify. Could be a pelecypod, or a brachiopod.
