Hello all,

I find chunks of this type of bone regularly along the banks. I’ve yet to find more than two sides of the rectangle but I have found pieces up to a foot long. Interestingly, not necessarily curved…

I don’t  bring these bone chunks home but I saved this little section to hopefully get some insight as to what bones are rectangular? My assumption was this could only be a rib. Being the peace river I’d expect whale first and maybe a large mammal.

The fact they can be totally straight makes the rib theory a mess. The largest piece Ive pickup was a foot long and totally straight. That lead me to jaw sections….

Not looking for species ID here. More trying to understand where in anatomy we find extreme 90 deg angles like this ??

Appreciate everyone’s time and insight…

Thanks

Whale jaw elements seem to be the most likely option to me. Something like this:

@bockryan  goodness! That’s huge!

Thanks. This would explain why I don’t find all 4 sides. I’m finding the outer wall and bottom of the pieces. Assuming the break down the line of tooth sockets.

One thing that always made me curious is the lack of cetacean jawbones on marine-found sperm whale teeth. They all appear in singular teeth like this.
