Entocarlos Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Hi, After an unproductive day hunting at the Zandmotor near The Hague in the Netherlands known for Pleistocene fossils, I wanted to check whether these are fossils or just suggestively shaped rocks/man-made debris. I searched online and in the forum but could not find good tips for these, which may be a good pointer towards "just rocks" The unproductivity of my hunt was probably due to a combination of not knowing where to search plus many other people hunting for fossils on a Sunday. Any advice on that is welcome! The first looks to me like a weathered down fish vertebra (see protruding edges at the back) but I couldn't see any marks in the center. There were many of these at the beach, all very round with the same reddish color and different diameters and thicknesses. Also it is quite dense, feels almost metal. The second, a thin plate, is made of the same material as the first fossil it seems (quite heavy, red rock) and has a rough texture and rounded edges. In the third I was hoping for ray teeth, but the lack of a clear periodicity points me to just a rock. Thank you!
Fossildude19 Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Sorry, but these all look like rocks to me. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 IPFOTM -- MAY - 2024 _________________________________________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." sjaak Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 (edited) These are limonites or clay iron stone, common finds at Zandmotor, Maasvlakte 2 etc. The third (black) one I'm not sure of but looks like rock as well. Edited December 7, 2024 by sjaak 1 1
