Shaun-DFW Fossils Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 (edited) I have a few plesiosaur vertebrae that I’ve collected near this spot in Western Dallas County, Texas, but this is the first sizable fish vertebra I’ve found. It was exposed in the shallow water of a creek along a gravel bar that must have moved just enough to expose this 2.5 inch beauty. I believe it’s pachyrhizodus but I am asking for either confirmation or a correct ID if I’m wrong. Thanks in advance! I posted a couple of pics where I found it and a few others after getting home and scrubbing it with a soft bristled brush with soap and water. Edited December 8, 2024 by Shaun-DFW Fossils 1

I had a short one hour today before we started getting heavy rain, but I’m glad to get the rain, too..it will reveal my next batch of discoveries. We haven’t had a good rain in months. The vert is all I found (other than an ammonite in fairly bad shape and a segment of a larger ammonite), but it’s a quality find!
SPrice Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 You're welcome! I haven't been out fossil hunting in a couple of months as I focused on the fall fishing before all the water here freezes over with the exception of the rivers. The fishing was very rewarding with a few in the high teens and a couple breaking 20 pounds. Carp is my gamefish since it the big boy in this state. I have a number of big ammonites to prep out including two concretions weighing 70 and 110 pounds with 10" and 13" ammos in them. I found a site with jumbo ammos and couldn't resist adding a few to my collection. I would keep an eye on the vert find location and up and downstream to see if some more show up. My big fish vert is about an inch in diameter, found in NC, Holden Beach. 1
Rockwood Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 The vertebrae of older sharks can become quite calcified. Could this be one? 1
