Hey all, I was looking for a cool new fossil for my collection and came across this alligator jaw. I didn’t see a length listed. It seems real to me but i am definitely not an expert at identifying fakes. Is the whole thing real? Is it fake? Or is it a matter of real jaw with replaced teeth or vice versa? I am not made of money, so I’d like to be 150 percent sure of authenticity before i spend money on it. Any help is appreciated!

The teeth look like they have been placed in there.  Where is it supposed to be from?  How old?

It says its from the pleistocene of north Florida, no specific age. Apparently the teeth were found nearby and the roots were restored and placed in the jaw. It’s authentic according to the seller but i’ve seen a lot of “fossils” for sale that were supposedly authentic but very clearly not, so i just want to make sure.

If the roots were restored, it sounds like they were shed teeth.  Which means they  might have been part of this jaw, but most likely not.  Authentic fossils, yes, but likely not authentic single creature.  If the teeth were from this animal and had fallen out post mortem, they would have roots.

Now that I look at the photo again, I can see that the roots are all reconstructed.  The teeth have been added.

I think i will still get it, and just display the teeth separately if it’s possible. It looks like the teeth would be able to be removed, but i’ll double check beforehand. Thank you for the help!
