Acquired some unopened nodules I don't have freezer space to freeze thaw them and am doing this for fun. Where on the nodule am I supposed to whack it?

How hard and how many times do I need to whack? Should I soak them?

Generally, I think this requires trial and error.  Some concretions just pop, ... some require more, ... finesse!  :P

Ralph can probably answer more thoroughly.

As Tim stated above, it will be trial and error. I will post pics later today to show you. The best method is freeze / thaw. I know you stated that you do not have room in your freezer, but you do not have to freeze all of them at once. Sometimes I freeze one or two at a time in a small Tupperware type sandwich container. If you do this, let the concretions soak for a day or two, freeze for a couple days, thaw and let dry, lightly tap and if they don’t pop, repeat again and again. It is a long process. You can cycle containers of concretions so you always have something soaking, freezing and thawing and you are not taking up my room in the freezer with one sandwich container.

Thank you

Here are a couple pics of two concretions-

An elongated one:

A round one:

On the elongated one you would use the hammer along this side-

The round one you would strike here-

Of course you get a better result by freeze / thawing as was the case with the above concretions.
