Shellseeker Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 (edited) Adding what has been my best find, maybe ever. Found in the Peace River Florida, at 2PM on June 21st, 2011. These are generally mixed era formations with a combination of Pliocene/Miocene for marine life and Pleistocene for mammals. This fossil should be Pliocene/Miocene. Preparation time is minimal: I rinsed in water prior to taking the photo. It is slightly less black when dry. Identified on TFF by Bobby as a Dermal Buckler from a Roughtail Stingray (Dasyatis centroura). Since these fossils are relatively rare, there is some possibilities that it may be ThornBack Ray (raja Clavata) or Thorny Skate (Amblyraja radiata). All 3 species have similar thick button like dermal denticles. Research on Dermal Bucklers indicates 1) these are rare fossil finds and many are not easily identified 2) This one is a double (having 2 thorn/spike holders) and there are photos of singles, triples and quads. 3) size matters: females tend to have larger dermal bucklers, attached not only to the tail, along the spine but also in the underbelly of the animal. I have yet to make a judgement on why the underside of this fossil looks like petrified tree bark.
