Mudduck
Yes, this item is located in a parking lot. I am afraid to dig it out because it may damage the fossil. The location is where I have found my very first tooth. It is where my daughter swims in downtown Charleston, SC. It is more than in inch long. Any ideas as to what this item may be? Auspex
I can see how it attracted your attention, but I'm not sure that it's organic. RichW9090
It seems to be bilaterally symetrical; and if it is in fact bone, each side is made up of two distinct ossifications. I think you ought to dig it out! Edited April 25, 2013 by RichW9090 The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
BobWill
I agree with RichW. There are too many symmetrical features for it to be just a rock. Breaking it getting it out still beats the treatment it'll get left alone in a parking lot. Could it be the bottom of a broken mandible?
Mudduck
A friend and a member of the forum brought out a very good point. Wait, until it gets hot. It will be easier to dig out. I will have to agree with him. I am down there frequently throughout the year so it will be interesting what it might actually be. Until then....it won't be long. It gets hot here quick. It's about that time that it will get real warm here.
Mudduck
Update! I finally was able to pop the item out. Good timing because they are now tearing up the parking lot to lay some new lines for the pool. Turns out that Auspex was right. It was not a fossil after all. To my surprise, it was a piece of Rubber! I couldn't believe it! Could have been a piece from a big tire. A little disappointed but I did find my first tooth there and was hoping for another good find. Thanks all, wished it were something more. Maybe next time. Ramo
Thanks for the update. Sorry it wasn't a fossil! Most times we never get to hear what these turn out to be.
