My Larger Calvert Cliffs Teeth

Recommended Posts

I have been grouping some of small/medium sized teeth in the Calvert Cliffs bag (from Cowshark) that appear similar to me-to help with ID'ing them. There are some rather large I decided to post now in the hopes of ID'ing first. I know some of the roots are broken, and I'm not sure if the smooth edged teeth are worn so or not.... Any comments welcome and thanks!!! :D

1. Love the color in this one...

Thanks again. I know shark teeth aren't easy to identify and some of these are broken. I just love them though so here's to hoping! lol ;)

Lisa,

#1 megalodon

#2 chubutensis or meg

#3,4 & 5 some type of sand tiger probably Carcharias taurus

#6,7,8 & 9 mako's, probably Isurus (Cosmopolotodus) (Carcharodon) hastalis

Bulldozers and dirt Bulldozers and dirt
behind the trailer, my desert
Them red clay piles are heaven on earth
I get my rocks off, bulldozers and dirt

Nice finds... I am actually going to take a trip to the Calvert Cliffs next week, weather permitting.

1 & 2. Are megalodon. I don't know all the details about the age of the Calvert cliff sediment, so I can't say for sure that at least one of them (#2 specifically) could be a Chubutensis.

3-5. Look like some type of sandtiger to me but I don't collect these species so I don't know as much about them

6-9. these are all makos. Isurus hastalis most likely. Maybe even Isurus planus for the last two curved ones, not 100% sure though.

Thanks for sharing! I hope to find some of these next week!

Well, I guess Pete and I were typing at the same time. I didn't see his post until I posted mine so I guess we are on the same page.

Yea I think we all three must have been typing at the same time :)

I am seeing some teeth and such that have the orangish color on them similar to #6's root. I am wondering if that is just matrix or pyrite?

Isurus planus is not known from the east coast.

The teeth take on the color of the sediments, from the minerals etc. It is not uncommon from some locations to find teeth of 5 or 6 different colors.

OK good to know! We have a lot of pyrite here and the color threw me off. I just wanted to be safe since it can wreck good fossils if stored together. The colors are great and I found a little stingray plate that is a dark red and another with purple in it. I was very excited about this... lol ;)

Nice finds, I love collecting the cliffs and you can find some very nice specimens and the colors can be some of the best.

These were in a box of material that member Cowshark so kindly sent us, along with 2 other bags from different locations. The Calvert Cliffs colors totally sucked me in. I now need to get there one of these days... ;)

Lissa, glad to see your having fun with the teeth etc. One of the things I love about the cliffs where I collect is the wide array of colors that the teeth take on depending on which layer of sediment they were in. Teeth with white colored roots and crowns are among the rarest colored specimens. My favorite specimens are the ones that are a dark blue or reddish colored enamel.

The bag with Lee Creek material will also have specimens with a variety of colors, but not as many different colors at the Calvert cliffs material. The Paleocene material as you saw it mostly all grey to black colored. That's because if the color of sediment that they came from was that same dark grey color.

Daryl.

Good Job Lissa, I will be at the cliffs the next two weekends, normally I spend some time at Brownies early morning then Flags, if you see a little Miata in either place wave at me. Best of luck. MK

Brownies hasn't been too productive lately; all the little grey clay pebbles are covering most of the beach areas. Flag ponds has been better, especially if you go North (to the left) and walk a ways. I tend to find nice large® mako's up that way.

Hey Lissa, yes I prowl the north side of Flags all the time, the picture I have here is from there, I'm good friends with Dan who is always there and Randy, just say Mario says hi, and yes I've been dealing with Bronies pesky pebbles and even worse last time I was there the beaches were totally iced, I'm hoping todays rain will melt away everything, however tides and wind are bad, South wind with high tide at 8:30 AM, that can make Brownies not fun in the morning, but on my head I have it as a good spot if I can hit the right timing, after ice melting and this rain.. can't wanit to post my megalodon pic..LOL. Best of luck and be very careful at Brownies, BTW we probably have crossed paths there... Cheers. MK
