RyanNREMTP Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Title says it all. I'm planning on a short day trip in the morning to the fossil park in Mineral Wells. I'll have a carload of family members I think. I'll have my two oldest sons with some Benadryl on standby and then a sister or nephew or two as well. So we'll see what transpires when I'm there. I do want another trilobite to add to my collection. Anyone else going to be in the area that day?
erose Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 It will be fun. I was there briefly last thursday. Only a couple of hours but my find of the day was my first complete rostroconch. It is tiny but 99% complete and not like any others I have found even pieces of. I am on the road for a few more days and will post photos when i get home. The pit did look freshly washed by rain and i picked up plenty of other nice fossils. Oh, and the goofy thing was when i arrived there were several cars including a MW POLICE cruiser and then i heard gunfire! Another couple was walking in pulling a cooler and seemed ok with the pops of a rifle. Turned out to be blanks as a small film crew was making some sort of war movie. They were filming a guy in helmet and fatigues with a carbine as he crawled and shot his way thru the gullies at the head end of the pit. The cop was just keeping an eye on things and was cool with me being at the other end of the pit. You never know what you'll run into when collecting.
caldigger Posted May 18, 2014 Posted May 18, 2014 I hope they picked up their shell casings. I hate going places and having brass casings all over the place. Especially when detecting!
RyanNREMTP Posted May 18, 2014 Author Posted May 18, 2014 Sounds like we should a great time. My son and i found a great spot when we were there last. I imagine we will likely stick in that area. I'm glad to hear about the rain. I've been having withdraws from the Waco site since i couldn't get by there last week after all the rain. Glad you discovered some good stuff.
RyanNREMTP Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 Well that was an interesting trip to say the least. I didn't find any trilobites but found tons of crinoids pieces. Anyone want to hazard a guess of how many crinoid pieces it takes to get a ton? My cousin's son found what I think is a shark tooth with one minute of us being there. I also picked up a bucket of matrix to slowly go through when I'm bored.
RyanNREMTP Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Anyone ever seen this growth on a crinoid column before?
New Members Bobby_Bear Posted May 26, 2014 New Members Posted May 26, 2014 Wonderful. I would love to take a trip there this summer.
erose Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Here is that tiny, but mostly complete, rostroconch. The missing bit appears to be a spine-like(?) protrusion of shell at the center between the other spines.
RyanNREMTP Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 That is sweet looking. I haven't seen anything like that there.
