Frankenkrabbe

A recent find from the Corsicana Formation, Maastrichtian, of Texas...one of my best examples of the muffin crab Dakoticancer australis. Its initial presentation was rather unassuming as it came out of the ground in chunks.

With a little scribe work, this specimen started to show some potential, but it had some critical voids as well, the worst being the entire left claw missing.

I scrounged around in my scraps from the site, came up with a joined carpus and propodus not attached to a carapace, and with a little scribe work, "Frankencrabbed" it in place. With some strategically placed epoxy putty, I filled some voids and reconstructed tips of the new left claw.

To the motivated (with the skill and the time) go the spoils.

A wonderful specimen indeed!

Crabtacular! How did you realize that was a crab at first? Was it inside some surrounding matrix or loose? Nice prep work and restoration!

in one of the first pics you can see a little white showing. i think i first saw nubby lugs eroded in section. looked like a few mud covered cigarette butts.
