Hey everyone!

I was poking around in Lake Winnebago today and came across this little rock. I can identify most of it, but what is that long line with little lines coming off of it? It kind of looks like a mouth and one of the crinoid circles looks like an eye so this one is named Monster Rock. The area is Ordovician and was created by a glacier.

Oh, and I ordered a new camera, so no more bad cell phone pictures soon! :)

I turned the contrast up in a few pictures to try to make it as clear as possible. The last picture is the back of the rock.

A fun story: I ran into a girl I went to high school with, and her kids. Her little girl Tristan was so curious about rocks and fossils so I let her help me find rocks and taught her what a fossil is and how it's formed. She took home more than a few rocks with tiny crinoid marks (or croid circles, as she called them). I think she's a future fossil addict! :)

Thank you for the help!

Edit: fixed spelling mistakes

My take on this is that this is a horn coral, or rugose coral, that has been eroded through, so you are seeing a cross section of it, and the little lines coming from the circular line are the septa.

If you slice a fruitcake, and the cut happens to bisect a cherry, what you would see would be a red ring. Fossil-laden matrix is nature's fruitcake, and interpreting what lies entombed within requires familiarity with form, some imagination, and the mindset of a CAT scanner. :)

Thanks guys! Mindset of a CAT scanner.. I like that! I appreciate all the info and the pic. I'm saving it on my tab. I really love corals, always have, so any coral find is awesome to me.

Thank you again!
