Bev Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Okay, so I have 19 different rocks from ONE site here showing trilo parts! Most I have ever found in one location. Stumbled on this spot looking for Wubbles Ravine and spent about 45 minutes here taking pics and just digging around. It's a shale, Dubuque or Makoketa, heck could be Decorah for all I know. One of the three because that is what we have here. Ordovician Southeastern Minnesota This is going to take multiple replies, so please be patient. Also, if you see something you want just PM me. They will just go in my Trilobite garden anyway and that is getting rather full. But I can say that I have never found a more prolific trilobite site and someone has been working it! #1 This is the first rock I found - 2 pygidiums in it. Rock 2 has an unidentified fossil, I've never seen anything like it, but it doesn't belong here. Continued... The more I learn, I realize the less I know. Bev Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Actually I think this rock got out of sequence and should be #19 #16 There is a lot going on in this one. All I can recognize (honestly!) are trllobite pygidiums, when they are laid out flat and sometimes when they are enrolled. Continued... The more I learn, I realize the less I know. piranha Posted September 25, 2014 Posted September 25, 2014 Bev, The photo you marked as Isotelus (pygidium) is correct. Some examples are small so they are difficult to evaluate from the photos. I labeled the others including the unusual one with the bubble-shaped glabella. Midwest Paleo collected an undescribed Harpidella sp. from Decorah that looks very similar to the example you posted: LINK 1
Bev Posted September 25, 2014 Author Posted September 25, 2014 Well, some of those are new for me! Those H species - there appear to be two separate ones - I gave Caleb the one that he wanted that he thought was special... Do you want them? I haven't unloaded my truck yet, so I'm still likely to find them. Obviously, all of those were infield photos, anything you think I should take better of? I want to thank you so much Piranha for IDing these for me. Hope you got a kick out of it! It was a very exciting hunt all in all. I think Carl would have a blast at that spot! Bev Posted September 26, 2014 Author Posted September 26, 2014 Here is Rock 1 cleaned up with water. For scale and showing 2 trilo pygidiums and 2 areas of interest. Pygidium 1 Pygidium 2 and I'm thinking this is a Flexicalymene, but what do I know. Area of Interest 1 Area of Interest 2 That squarish thing looks really trilobitish to me. piranha Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 This new photo is not a Harpidella, it's a Flexicalymene partial cranidium (fixed cheek and glabellar lobes). Unfortunately, the other one you posted is also a Flexicalymene. Sorry I overlooked the scale, but it's just an isolated Flexicalymene glabellar lobe. These are both Flexicalymene pygidia: 1
Bev Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 Thanks Scott! Any thoughts on the last pic I posted with the squarish thing? The more I learn, I realize the less I know.
