frankh8147 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I recently found this chunk at Big Brook NJ and am curious about the circular black ring at the edge. Could this be part of a jaw or anything like that? Thanks! -Frank
frankh8147 Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 More pictures of different angles..
njfossilhunter Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) It appears to be a tooth socket from a Mosasaur jaw and from the looks of the concave area it could very well be a Mosasaurus Maximus. Very Nice find and very rare.....Congrad's Here is a picture of a Maximus from the NJ museum Edited November 18, 2014 by njfossilhunter TonyThe Brooks Are Like A Box Of Chocolates,,,, You Never Know What You'll Find. njfossilhunter Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I forgot to add that this also may have the root base of a tooth in the bone section.....They replace each tooth with a new one that pushes the old one out of the jaw. frankh8147 Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Wow thank you! I had it in my head that it was part of a jaw but can sometimes be prone to 'wishful thinking' so thank you again!
Shellseeker Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Wow -- a chunk of bone turns out to be identifiable dinosaur -- Got to be a great feeling. Congrats The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
Carl Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Nope - sorry Shellseeker. A mosasaur isn't a dinosaur. They are giant marine lizards that were contemporary with the non-avian dinosaurs.
Fossildude19 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Wow -- a chunk of bone turns out to be identifiable dinosaur -- Got to be a great feeling. Congrats Not actually a dinosaur, but, rather, an aquatic reptile. Sorry, just being pedantic. If it helps at all, I sometimes correct people's grammar, too. Shellseeker Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Nope - sorry Shellseeker. A mosasaur isn't a dinosaur. They are giant marine lizards that were contemporary with the non-avian dinosaurs. Thanks for the correction -- I actually knew that but,, maybe my fingers typed with brain engaged or maybe a few more of those little grey cells just burned out. In any case, great find -- The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
