New Members chiselandgristle Posted January 7, 2015 New Members Posted January 7, 2015 Hi all, I'm new. I have this ammonite that was purchased by a friend a few years back but we don't know where it came from. Sorry for the glare but the ruler is there to show it's about 12 inches long at it's widest point. He thinks it came from an English dealer. Anyways - any help in identifying would be appreciated. Thanks so much.
Ammojoe Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 It's a Mantelliceras from Morocco. Kind regards, Joe
enoscrawler Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 That was too easy huh Joe nice ammo by the way
Carl Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 I agree with Morocco. And it looks VERY doctored. As in strongly, if not completely carved. Very common "phenomenon" with Moroccan ammonites.
New Members chiselandgristle Posted January 8, 2015 Author New Members Posted January 8, 2015 So that would be bad if it was carved but I respect your opinion. My limited research shows that Mantelliceras is common in England, and like I said in the OP this guy came from an English dealer. Is there a reason, other than possibly being faked, that we think it is from Morrocco over England? Thanks for all your help.
fgiarro Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Agree with Carl, the ribs of the left side and the shape of the inner whorls seem a bit weird for me. Apart from its origin, a Mantelliceras sp is a good ID
Kosmoceras Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 This is definitely not a British specimen - it does not have the same preservation as those found in the chalk or greensand. I agree with Morocco regarding the origin. Regards,

A number of big English dealers at the Tucson fossil show sell Morrocan material including Ammonites. The preservation is typical of what you find from that region.
JustPlainPetrified Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 So...I have to go to Tuscon to buy a Moroccan fossil from a British dealer...in Canadian currency, right? I must get down then one of these years to take in the full event. I think the sun and snow are going to my head.

We have lots of Canadians visitors coming to Tucson for the show.

Troodon Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 No we never have Canadian weather but occasionally there is a dusting in the valley. Usually gone by noon.
