New Members 1fossilfinder Posted January 15, 2015 New Members Posted January 15, 2015 Anyone have any ideas on this one? Diameter of the concretion is about 1.5 inches, found in Washington State.
izak_ Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Welcome to TFF! It looks like a bivalve shell. Not sure on species. Well preserved, and nice find
kauffy Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Could be a bivalve, also reminds me of a gastropod as well...I'm sure those more familiar with Washington state concretions will chime in. Can you give a more specific area where it was found? This will help determine age and potentially help identification. FossilDAWG Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I'm reminded of a gastropod along the lines of Bulla (see here for images of several species). Unfortunately, I think you will have to prep it more to uncover enough features (such as the spire, which would be recessed in the rest of the shell, not sticking out) for a more confident ID. Don 1
jpc Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) I also see more of a tightly coiled with large aperture gastropod. Nice find. Edited January 15, 2015 by jpc
New Members 1fossilfinder Posted January 15, 2015 Author New Members Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) Thanks very much for the replies all! This was found in a residential area about 15 miles north-east of Seattle. The pictures of the Bulla look pretty darn close. I had never considered prepping the fossil any more, but from what I've read on the forum here it seems I might be able to clean it up a bit without too much risk of destroying it. From a little bit of digging around online, it appears these marine life concretions are fairly common in several areas near there. Looking forward to finding some more! RJB Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Being that what is showing is off center tells me gastro, but the shell material looks clammy? Good luck RB
enoscrawler Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 I've got to go with bivalve wish I could see the other side pry it out lol just joking
