Recommended Posts

Hello,

has someone an Idea about these shells? The upper one is 41 mm in length.

Location: Germany, Rhineland-Palatinate, river Rhine valley, 53572 Unkel; commen Brachiopods here are Chonetes unkelensis, Platyorthis circularis taunica, Hysterolites hystericus, Rhenorensselaeria strigiceps, among others.

Thanks in advance,

Peppi

Hi Peppi,

What you have are definitely pelecypods but I am not as familiar with lower Devonian fauna as I'd like to be. It looks like a Modiomorpha sp. type shell but not sure if that existed in your area. The Fossilworks.org website does have an entry for Modiomorpha as being found in the Eifellian hills in Germany:

G. Fuchs. 1982. Upper Siegenian and Lower Emsian in the Eifel Hills. CFS. Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg 55:229-255

It also seems to list Arduspirifer and Euryspirifer as being present in the same rocks. Maybe if you can find the above article it will be of some help?

Thank you, Howard and Dave, for your answers.

@ Dave:I haven´t found the article on the internet, but I think I can get it from Senckenberg.

Greetings from the river Rhine valley,

Michael
