Rodney Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 This was a find from yesterday, looks like fossil wood to me but I had rather the experts say for sure. Looks like the age could be all over the place, from a few million up to above 35 million for the coastal plains region of the south east U.S.. This sample is as hard as a rock and just as heavy as a solid rock. Rodney
Auspex Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I think you have it right; a friend recovered a very large trunk with this same preservation from a construction site in Washington, DC. Plantguy Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hey Rodney. Nice specimen--I like the texture. I've got a couple different pieces and I'm wondering if there is any chance that its more than just a cast of the external wood features and maybe also has some of the internal structure preserved? I've got some pieces from elsewhere that are just splintered rock inside and others where you can actually see the rings and some of the rings/internal cell structure. Maybe someone from that area or who may just know might chime in and let us know. Thanks for showing us your find. Continued hunting success! Regards, Chris
Rodney Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 Thanks Auspex for the ID, and thanks Chris for your contribution to this topic. I can`t answer your question but I would like to take a look at any you would like to share. Rodney
