When we got this the card said it was pleistocene from Nebraska. Is is a fossil and can you tell what species.

It don't look fossilized to me....It looks like a caimin skull.

Pleistocene Nebraska? Nope. Modern - you can see the remnants of periosteum, particularly in the pits where it couldn't be scraped or brushed off.

[Edit: I suspect these two posts are about the same specimen, from the same family - they are within a few miles of each other.]

It's a nice little skull, just as a modern comparative specimen. Welcome to your family! Hope that we can contribute to building your kid's interest in paleontology!
