Nez Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 (edited) I've had a lot of people tell me this is petrified wood, but it doesn't resemble other petrified wood I've seen. Found in cape girardeau Missouri in A creek, let me know what you think ~Nez Edited February 22, 2015 by Nez
Tethys Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 (edited) Your photos are not in focus when I click for a larger view, so making any ID is difficult. It appears to be a piece of layered sedimentary stone, very similar in color and texture to some others you have posted. It could possibly be a marine stromatolite, or it is just showing differential erosion between layers. A plant ID is not impossible. Woody plants had not evolved yet, though stem and pith casts of various tree like plants ( Calamites , Lepidodendron) are known in MO from Pennsylvanian age strata. Hope that helps. Rodney Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Was said this is fossil or petrified wood from my collection, any other opinions? Rodney
Auspex Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 Was said this is fossil or petrified wood from my collection, any other opinions? Rodney I think it is; doesn't seem to be anything else it could be, either. Looks pretty crystallized; I bet it rings like a bell!
