Carcharodontosaurus Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 (edited) Years ago, I found this seal bone on the beach. The brown color suggests to me that the bone may be a subfossil, or at least quite old. What do you think? The bone is about seven inches long. Edited March 1, 2015 by Carcharodontosaurus
njfossilhunter Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 it looks fossilized to me or what I should say it maybe partially fossilized. It maybe be iceaged or older. have you tested the bone?? You take a lighter to it and see if you can smell any kind of organic burning type of smell and if you do then its only less than 10,000 years ,,,either way its a cool find. Dave pom Allen Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 i am afraid it doesn't look like a seal bone to me. more like a sheep bone
RichW9090 Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 Although it's hard to tell without a good picture of the distal end, it appears to be an ungulate radius. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
Carcharodontosaurus Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 After considering what appears to be a clean cut at the end of the bone, I think you guys are right. Sheep radius it is.
Boesse Posted March 2, 2015 Posted March 2, 2015 I second Dave: it's not from a pinniped. I think it's a sheep radius.
