Could this be from a predator? It's right at 1.5 inches. I plan on removing the matrix and I will post more pics at that time.

It does have that "boney fingers" sorta look don't it.

Be careful a little at a time sure goes a long way.

I use a "Flexible" clear fingernail polish (easily removable) to avoid specimen shatter.

It helps with some crabs "not all".

Could help with bony parts as well.

Gary,

I think it is too soon to tell. I would remove the matrix, measure all sides with photos again and add to post. It does look like a phalanx, but many different animals overlap in size, and you need to see some detail to say for sure.

nice find, it looks like it's in pretty good condition so far.

Don't remove the matrix unless you're confident that the matrix is not coprolite. I found a gator coprolite with a deer toe bone intact. I don't see any surface evidence of coprolite, such as 'grunt rings,' but those may be weathered away. Just a thought.

Wow! Anyway you might post that amazing gator coprolite?

This seems an extraordinary specimen...

How often do you find bones in water-worn matrix cobbles there?

Is Pleistocene a sure thing with this one?

I don't think it's coprolite. It seems more like sandstone, but it's really hard. I already started trying to chisel it off on the part not near the bone. It's not chiseling very well. This is the first time I've found a bone like this. I have found lots of other chunks of this kind of matrix that look like they were wrapped around something. I'll be paying those more attention now!

I'm pretty sure this is pleistocene as it was found close to a lot of other pleisto material. Now I'm torn whether to remove the matrix or not. I'd really like to get an id on this critter.

If you need to reveal more to get an ID, please try to do just enough for that purpose, and preserve the rest as context; there could be something unexpected here!

I vote with those others who say leave it in the matrix...only expose what is necessary.
