New Members SeashoreShelby Posted March 10, 2015 New Members Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) I found this on the beaches of Ocean City, Maryland (Atlantic Ocean) just yesterday, 3-9-15. After searching photos of worn-down shark's teeth, I feel as if this is nothing more than a rock. It has many layers. It also has slight ridges on the raised portion, toward the point of the triangle. Does anyone have insight on my beach find? Thank you, kindly! Edited March 10, 2015 by SeashoreShelby
Plax Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 initially looked like a frag from a mastodon tooth cusp but am almost positive it's the heavy hinge area of an oyster with the rest of the shell broken off. Keep in mind that that what we say here are opinions. If you have one of those semi-fossil black oyster shells found on the beach check it out for comparison. This one is a real brain teaser! 1

For me looks like an oyster shell fragment. 1 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. Carl Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) I'm behind the oyster ID 100%. I've seen them wind up like this many times. As a VERY young paleontologist, looooong ago, I saw one of these as a trilobite! Edited March 11, 2015 by Carl 1
New Members SeashoreShelby Posted March 11, 2015 Author New Members Posted March 11, 2015 Wow - thank you very much! An oyster hinge did not cross my mind, but after reading your opinions, I searched images. Sure enough - I think your thoughts are dead-on. I was able to find many images that looks very similar. Really cool. Thanks again!
