MCJ Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Found this heavy bone at low tide. Looks like whale bone?
Auspex Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 I think it must be (there is a decided lack of options). Is there an image of the other side? More details might ensue. Boesse Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Sometimes you gotta wait a day or so to get some informed responses. This is certainly from a large cetacean, but it is unclear A) what part of the skull this is, whether it's a baleen whale or a large odontocete (e.g. sperm whale, or giant beaked whale), or C) whether or not this is a fossil or modern specimen. Did you collect it? 1
MCJ Posted March 23, 2015 Author Posted March 23, 2015 Thanks heaps for the responses guys. I didn't collect it on the day, but put it above the high tide mark. Went back and got it today. I'll take some photos from other angles. The back is less obvious and has a darker marrow colour with more open fibres, (there's also a fair bit of weed and barnicle on it.. I suppose it is more 'modern specimen' but I'm pretty new to this!
MCJ Posted March 24, 2015 Author Posted March 24, 2015 Perhaps this is not bone, but some sort of hard pumice stone coral that has been forced to grow between a few round smooth rocks?
Boesse Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 Nope, that's definitely bone alright. Could you post some more photos of it from several angles?
