Ptychodus mammilaris? Temple, Bell Co., Texas. unknown stage, unknown formation

Photo 3&4:

1: Ptychodus mammilaris? unknown findspot, unknown county, unknown state, unknown stage, unknown formation. label said that they were from the Western Interior Seaway, which was according to the guy I traded them with a county in some state, I know thats not true, but maybe They guy who he traded with is on this forum and recognises these teeth?

2: Ptychodus decurrens? see 1 of photo 3&4

I bought all three these teeth from the same guy, just as the big whipllei from post 1, and the occidentalis from post 3. maybe someone recognises them and can complete the missing pieces? (name place and time)

Thanks in advance,

Greetings,

Sander

Is this silence because everybody agrees with me on the ID or has this topic just been overlooked?

Please react because at this moment I do not know whether this is all correct or not.

Thanks,

Sander

There is a good Ptychodus identification guide in a pinned thread at the top of the Fossil ID section. I think you will find it useful.

Hi Creto,

I know, i've used that to ID these teeth, but I might have made mistakes since I am not really an expert in these teeth.

I think those identifications are correct as labelled.

This tooth is not P. occidentalis. It looks very worn as if someone polished it.

You need to include the sizes of the teeth.

I would not buy teeth without good locality information. I can understand buying something because it's unusual, but with fossils, it is most important to know exactly where or almost exactly where a specimen was found especially if it is unidentified or if you want to confirm the identification. It gives you a solid starting point. It can help you identify the fossil. With only the most general information, there will always be at least one question that can never be answered.

I think a lot of people are unsure about Ptychodus (very few experts and I am certainly not one) and it is also very possible that this topic was overlooked. I like shark teeth too but some days it's difficult to find time to spend on the forum so I miss some topics. I think this happens to a lot of people.

Is this silence because everybody agrees with me on the ID or has this topic just been overlooked?

Please react because at this moment I do not know whether this is all correct or not.

Thanks,

Sander
