New Members snowy Posted April 7, 2015 New Members Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) I would like some help to identifying this jaw bone. It was buried in a side hill with creeping cedar growing on top of it. It has been there for a long time. I do live in buffalo country. I also have neck vertebrae bones. I spotted these bone with one small spot of white with about 2 feet of ground on top and about 2 feet in the bank. This jaw bone is 16 inches long. I hope someone can help me out and hope I have the right forum for help. Thanks Edited April 7, 2015 by snowy
New Members snowy Posted April 7, 2015 Author New Members Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) Thanks. I found this spot years ago but never investigated till lately. It is in a area that no equipment or motor vehicle could reach. You walk or by horse and rough country. So why do you say horse is there something that tells you that? Edited April 7, 2015 by snowy
jpc Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) Not a horse.. much too delicate for a horse. Google 'horse mandible". I think it is a deer. Althopugh 16 inches may be too big for a deer.... cow? Edited April 7, 2015 by jpc
RichW9090 Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Horse mandibles are completely fused together. This has a joint. It is a bovid, either bison or cow - looks fresh enough to be cow. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
jpc Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I agree with Rich... I just googled both deer and cow mandible.
siteseer Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 (edited) The teeth don't look like horse. The upper teeth have a more square-like chewing surface and the lowers are more rectangular. It could be bison or cattle. If you can get a close-up of the teeth from both sides and one straight-down at the chewing surface, someone might be able to be more definite. Edit: While I was thinking about this post, Rich and JP were quicker on the draw. Thanks.I found this spot years ago but never investigated till lately. New Members snowy Posted April 8, 2015 Author New Members Posted April 8, 2015 (edited) Here is a few pictures looking down on the teeth. As far a cattle go I don't believe any cattle have been in this area. I guess it could be possible but not likely. With creeping cedar growing above this find and undisturbed ground around this find I can tell they have been there a long time. Had to dig 2 feet down and two feet in and ground was hard. Roots had grown into the bones. So what do you think it is from? Edited April 8, 2015 by snowy
Rodney Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 What do you think this jaw bone is to the far left under glass and cabinet? Rodney
Fruitbat Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 I'm definitely agreeing with RichW9090 on this one...bovid (cow or bison). Rodney...the jaw section in your photo looks a lot like a deer but a good view of the occlusal (chewing) surface of the teeth would definitely be useful. -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library
RichW9090 Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Deer, yes. The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
Fruitbat Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 Thank goodness you didn't say "yes, deer" RichW9090 (chuckling). -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library
