Ludwigia Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I was back at my favorite haunts in the Wutachtal recently, so I figured it's about time to open up a fresh thread for 2015. I finished off the first find a few days ago and already posted the process and result here: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/53909-ammonite-preparation/ Now I've got the second one done and there shall certainly be more to come as time goes on. This one is a plate with 5 Ancolioceras opalinoides ammonites and a few bivalve shells which measures in at 22x14cm. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
ynot Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Hey Rodger, Very good piece, and the prep job is really exceptional too!! Tony
Ludwigia Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Thanks guys. The prep was quite easy this time around since the plate came out of the outcrop pretty well as is. It was in 2 pieces which I glued back together and reduced its size a bit and then just 2 hours of scribing and abrading did the trick. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Manticocerasman Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 that's a really beautiful plate. growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional.
Jeffrey P Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 I'm impressed. Congratulations and thanks for posting. Great find, wonderfully displayed.
Ludwigia Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Thanks guys. As you can well imagine, I'm very happy with it. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ammojoe Posted April 16, 2015 Posted April 16, 2015 Wondeful Wutach it seems! Your preparation is right on again. I'm wondering, do you think these Ammonites could be prepared without abrasive? Kind regards, Joe
Ludwigia Posted April 16, 2015 Author Posted April 16, 2015 Wondeful Wutach it seems! Your preparation is right on again. I'm wondering, do you think these Ammonites could be prepared without abrasive? I did used to attempt that in the past before I aquired an abrader, but the results are not always the best since sometimes the matrix or shell substance adheres tenatiously to the ammonite. I had to set aside quite a few that I could easily have saved had I had the abrader. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted April 19, 2015 Author Posted April 19, 2015 Just finished another one. Ancolioceras opalinoides (again). 7.5cm. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Gotta go back again soon. Nothing left to prep from there now that this one's done. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/

Shamalama Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Beautiful! Ludwigia Posted May 3, 2015 Author Posted May 3, 2015 (edited) It's been raining practically all week, but luckily enough for me, Saturday was dry, so I decided to head off to the Wutach and do a bit of exploring. I spent a good half of the day clambering about the slippery slopes, dodging or tripping over the underbrush and treading unwittingly on the odd lubricated branch lying under the leaves. Needless to say, I looked a bit like a defensive tackle on a rainy day after a few hours, and since I wasn't having much success, I decided to check out some of my old digs which I hadn't been at for a couple of years in the hopes that the frost had done its work in the meantime. Sure enough, the cliff at my third stop had loosened up enough that I could pry some things out of one of the productive layers at this spot. I've made a couple of photos of the raw finds that I managed to dig out within a couple of hours and I figured I'd continue on later showing some preparation progression shots and the final products. I won't go into much detail this time, just giving an idea. The 2 pieces on the left in the box on the left came out together, as you can tell by the impression on the top one. I'm going to try and get them back together again and make a multiblock out of it. It's a similar situation with the one at the top left in the right hand box. Ludwigia Posted May 3, 2015 Author Posted May 3, 2015 Here's the first one that I already finished off this morning. It didn't take all that long, since it was pretty well exposed to begin with. Can you guess which one it is? Ancolioceras opalinoides 12cm. Complete with partial shell preservation. Turned out well on both sides, too. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
ynot Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Some more of the great things You find and prep. , You are making Me jealous. Wish that I had I site so close that I could just "pop" over on a whim and find such good things. Hope Your hunting stays good, Tony PS MY last fossil hunting trip was a 6.5 hour drive to get to the local.
Ludwigia Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 Sorry 'bout that. A lot of people emigrated out of Europe because everything is so claustrophobically cramped over here, but I guess it does have advantages... Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 I got down to some serious prepping yesterday and managed to get that first multiblock done. I had a lot of matrix tzo get rid of in order to achieve what I was imagining. First I removed the matrix from around the ammonite on one piece. Here it is placed back in position on the other piece. Then I whittled down the other one and glued the 2 pieces together to make a sockel. The ammo fell out, but I put it in place for the front and back photos. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 And here's how it turned out in the end. I decided to cheat a bit and glued the ammo back on in a rotated position since I felt it looks better like that. The block measures 15x10cm. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
Ludwigia Posted May 4, 2015 Author Posted May 4, 2015 (edited) Here's another one I just finished off this evening. Before And after Edited May 4, 2015 by Ludwigia Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
