rynoceras Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Hello, My friend found this fossil several years ago in the Platteville Formation along the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota and has been perplexed trying to identify it. The knob in the upper middle portion could be a gastropod in contact with whatever the ringed figure is or the entire thing could be some strange cephalopod. We just don't know. The markings seen in the lower left of the photo on the right remind me of worm burrows (Rauffella palmipes?) but who knows? Any ideas? Thanks!
dshamilla Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Seems reminiscent of an imprint of a trilobite hypostome? If it is, not sure as to even what kind? Interesting specimen just as well.
Herb Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 (edited) Could be, or part of a glabella / cheeks with the middle broken out ?
