Unusual Pattern On Rock Found In Brownsville, Ca

Hello,

First let me say that I know nothing about geology or fossils. I found this interesting rock on our family property this weekend and I'm just really curious as to what might have caused the interesting striped pattern on the rock (whether it is some sort of fossil or not). Any ideas?

The rock is about 2.5" x 1.5" x 1.5"

Found in Brownsville, CA (which is not far from Lake Oroville).

Found the rock on dry land but we do have a small creek running through our property about 100 yards from where the rock was found - it could have easily been moved from the creek bank at some point.

If this is nothing interesting, no worries - just really curious about this rock! I took the photos before I cleaned it, but even after giving it a good scrub with dish detergent the markings are still there.

Welcome to the Forum. :)

It is indeed an interesting rock, - but I don't believe it is a fossil.

It appears to be a quartzite pebble, that has come from some metamorphosed sedimentary rock, maybe something like sandstone.

It appears that the lines may be from either minerals leaching in or out, or something like differential weathering.

I believe it to be geologic in nature, rather than biologic - so,... although it isn't a fossil, it is neat looking.
