njcreekhunter Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Hey everyone. I went to Ramanessin brook today and found this. It is definitely bone and I believe it is a piece of a hadrosaur jaw. I'd love to know what you all think. Thank you!
Plax Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 looks more like a split off piece of a croc or mosasaur jaw to me. I don't think that anyone can tell you definitely what this is. (could be wrong of course!)
TNCollector Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 I agree with Plax. With a specimen that small, and without any key characteristic features, all you can really say is that it is bone, probably from a marine reptile. It is more likely to be mosasaur/croc than hadrosaur, so that is most likely what it is. Is there anything about it that makes you think it is hadrosaur? You never know though! Maybe someone will chime in and say otherwise.
frankh8147 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 I think a closer picture can really help. I can't see the fine details of the bone.
njfossilhunter Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 yea ...it would be very hard to say what it is from a small piece of bone. njcreekhunter Posted June 11, 2015 Author Posted June 11, 2015 Thanks for the comments everyone! Yeah I normally wouldn't post a piece of bone this small. It just looks so much like some of the larger hadrosaur jaw pieces I've seen that I had to post it. I also found it interesting that the grain of the bone runs perpendicular to the grooves. Here are some better pics.
Fossildude19 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 (edited) I cropped, enlarged, and brightened the pics a bit. Don't know if it helps much. frankh8147 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 My guess would be Mosasaur due to the structure (but I'm not sure). http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/51870-big-brook-jaw-socket-question/?hl=%2Bbig+%2Bbrook
frankh8147 Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 Here is another link you can use to compare structure. ID'd on here and the New Jersey State Museum as Mosasaurus Maximus. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/50740-big-brook-bone-help/?hl=%2Bbig+%2Bbrook
njcreekhunter Posted June 15, 2015 Author Posted June 15, 2015 Thanks fossildude19 for improving the pics! Thank you for all your input!
