RJB Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 I got these from a guy while I was fossil fish hunting in the quarry. I belive he went through Nevada and Utah but really not sure where he picked these up. Im sure you folks know exactly what these two rocks are. Pics 1 and 2 are the same rock and pics 3 and 4 are of the other rock. I thank you for any help you can give. RB
Plantguy Posted June 13, 2015 Posted June 13, 2015 Hey RB, I agree with Jim...my first thought after the 2nd picture was maybe a section through a stromatolite and I was going to ask for a closeup but that last photo threw me in the flowstone/cave deposit camp... Might be fun to slab a piece and polish it to see the layers/details...cool stuff. Regards, Chris
AndreaN Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I can't help, but I had to say this: you said "what in tarnation..." and that made my day. I don't know anyone else who says that besides me! Auspex Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I agree with the on the cave formation idea. Although I was really hoping to see your 'tarnation', and raise you a 'varmint'... howard_l Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 Someone on the Facebook Fossil Forum page had something that looked a lot like these and it was from Utah also. I couldn't figure it out either, she broke off some pieces and put it in vinegar but it had no reaction. Someone suggested stromatolites too. She got my address and is going to send me a sample, I will let you know what I think of her sample. I have included a picture from her post. Howard_L http://triloman.wix.com/kentucky-fossils

Ludwigia Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 The jury's not out yet. I still haven't ruled out stromatolites. Greetings from the Lake of Constance. Roger http://www.steinkern.de/
old dead things Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 When you find out, let me know too. I have a couple of pieces I take with me to shows, put a big question mark sign up and HELP. Rock hounds love to tell you what your unknown rocks, minerals and fossils are. But so far all I have gotten is the piece is from a cave. I got mine in a box of rocks I bought at an auction, and most of the specimens were from Wyoming and Utah. Thanks Jim
RJB Posted June 14, 2015 Author Posted June 14, 2015 Thanks everyone. and some of you are quite funny! Im just going to call em 'stromas', for now, short for stromatolites. Not sure what to do with them though? They look like very good candidates for cutting and polishing, but I quit doing that many years ago and got rid of my equipment. RB
