Spanky312 Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Hi all! Found this this weekend in Surf City, NC while scouring the beach for shark teeth. I thought it was whale bone, but there is a hole bore through it. Not sur if it is whale bone because of that, and if it is, what in the world would drill through the bone like that. Hole is end to end. Thanks for the help! Diana
PaleoRon Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Looks like it might be a section of a rib. Can't pin down a specific species.
njfossilhunter Posted June 22, 2015 Posted June 22, 2015 Since its a small section of bone it will be rather hard to say what it is.....it can be a whale rib. Auspex Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 It is clearly a piece of bone; a section of long bone, judging by the "marrow cavity". I think it is not as flat as most rib bones, though, and small for a whale rib in any case.
