Fossil Claw Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Seller says stingray but it doesn't look like any stingray I have seen before. Too me it looks more like the top of a cat fish.
Fossil Claw Posted June 27, 2015 Author Posted June 27, 2015 Not really thinking of buying it. More or less trying to learn how to identify items.
calhounensis Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Looks like a bony fish, rather than a cartilaginous fish.
Fossildude19 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) I agree,... that spine on the "bottom" of the pic looks like a catfish to me. FossilDAWG Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 The pectoral spine Tim mentioned strongly suggests catfish to me. I recall there is a Green River catfish that is usually preserved as an impression with the actual bone dissolved, but I don't remember the name off the top of my head. Don 1

Don The catfish Astephus antiquus and Hypsidoris farsonensis are both known from the Green River Formation. oilshale Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 As Tim mentioned, definitely catfish, either Astephus or Hypsidoris. The red und uneven slab and the preservation (imprint without bones) suggest Farson, so I would guess Hypsidoris farsonensis. Congrats, nice and rare fish! 1 Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes (Confucius, 551 BC - 479 BC).
Fossildude19 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Would actually be worth the price on it, for sure. Fossil Claw Posted June 27, 2015 Author Posted June 27, 2015 I took a chance on it at $30. Good deal?
Taogan Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 Beautiful little catfish, from what I know of the prices in Europe it's a good price. It looks like a nice piece, wish I could get fish like that.
Fossildude19 Posted June 27, 2015 Posted June 27, 2015 I took a chance on it at $30. Good deal? Excellent deal! Not as rare as a stingray, but more rare than any of the common fish from Green River.
