minnbuckeye Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 The 4th of July holidays were spent with my extended family at Marblehead, Ohio. Everyone had a blast. Plenty of water activities for the family. Cedar Point Amusement Park provides MANY thrills for the young at heart. My ticker is] too too old for such stimulation. Kelly's Island is a quaint quiet little island with beaches, shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts, bike and golf cart rentals, excellent fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass and perch, and of course, Devonian fossils in all the rock around the island. Easy pickings for families.
minnbuckeye Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 Of coarse the fossil filled rocks peaked our interest, but it was the glacial grooves present on this island that were totally impressive. To stand there and think about how erosive glaciers had to have been to create such marks in the rock!! It is estimated the ice thickness approached a mile.
minnbuckeye Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 The grooves were discovered when a quarry began excavating rock from the island. Thank goodness the quarry had enough sense to preserve some of the glacier grooves. There are many other glacial grooves to explore around Kelly's Island and back at Marblehead.
minnbuckeye Posted July 7, 2015 Author Posted July 7, 2015 As you can see, even the grooves themselves are fossil filled! So make a family trip up to the shores of Lake Erie. It is worth the trip.
jcbshark Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Nice pics Mike, glad you all had a nice vacation Every once in a great while it's not just a big rock down there!
