Something Weird From Big Brook

Jeffrey P and me went to Big Brook in the morning and Ramanessin in the afternoon We found some cool stuff...I found this thing in Big Brook and really don't know what to make of it ...When looking at this with a loop you can easily see what looks like twisted rope laid together side by side ....but there would be patches of them running in one direction and then another one overlapping in a different direction and then another patch in some other direction....just like some kind of kaotic weave. The dino-lite pictures really don't capture all this...it appears to be on some kind of Mount Laurel concreation..Can anyone ID this thing.

I can't help, but how big is it? Sure looks interesting.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

How flat is the photographed surface and what does the other side look like ?

Side and bottom view would help

VERY interesting! I have no idea what that is. And when that happens at Big Brook, I get excited!

I'm not sure of this, but I'd suggest it could be the impression of a bryozoan colony. The bumps would have been the openings to the individual zooaria in the original colony.

This was my best guess as well. Any chance the concretion is bone. Almost looks like it could be a well worn plesiosaur vert. I have a nice impression of a bryozoan on a phosphatic ammonite steinkern at Ramanessin. http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/41691-bryozoan-on-inside-of-baculite-living-chamber/

I vote Plesiosaur vert. It looks like bone to me and the shape is identical to one my brother found. Can you take a picture of the sides? Plesiosaurs have indents that distinguish it from other verts.

The pattern is different however, so it could be something else..

OK...This thing is 1 1/4 inches across at it widest point and slightly concaved on the surface pictured ...it has what Looks like a shell impression (can't really see from my photo) under the weave of the raised twisted rope looking things that has patches of this overlapping each other. Mine dont look like the one Non-Remanie posted but I would guess something like it. ...I would conclude that it maybe a type of bryoan that grew on the outer side of a shell and what I may have is the imprint of the bryozoan on the shell. .Concretion on the other side ...there is what looks like a very small 5-6mm impression of a shell on the top side and maybe a rough impression of a shel on the back .. I'm having trouble with my laptop and can't download further pictures until I can get it fixed. Thanks for your input and if anyone has any more to add to this ..That would be great.

Lots of impressions in the sandy "mt. laurel" type lithology concretions at big brook, so this sounds like a good assessment with it in your hands.
