What is this? Some kind of tooth not sure to what... about .5" diameter on bottom and .5" to tip

Nice item. My guess would be a tortoise osteoderm

A photo of the bottom might help in the identification. It looks like it could be a croc tooth that has part of the outer layer broken off.
