jpc Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 (edited) We need a photo... Edited August 13, 2015 by jpc
fossilized6s Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I would love to see pictures of this "specimen". I can tell you right now that color doesn't usually fossilize/mineralize. So color has no bearing. ~Charlie~ "There are those that look at things the way they are, and ask why.....i dream of things that never were, and ask why not?" ~RFK ->Get your Mosasaur print ->How to spot a fake Trilobite ->How to identify a CONCRETION from a DINOSAUR EGG
Fruitbat Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 It looks a lot like a water-worn piece of quartzite. I don't think it's a fossil, unfortunately. -Joe Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library
Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 It is very plain to see that there is a reptile in this egg.i am trying to figure how to post pics
fossilized6s Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 (edited) I have to respectfully disagree with your reptile embryo ID. It does resemble water worn quartz. Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 I wish you could see and hold this, you would be amazed there is no doubt about what it is.
Cris Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Taylor, welcome to The Fossil Forum. Unfortunately, that really doesn't appear to be an egg and I don't see what you're seeing in it. It's not uncommon for people to see what appear to be recognizable patterns on rocks that have a lot of character like this one. Fossil eggs are very rare and they don't look like that.Paleontology/geology is a constant learning experience. I doubt you'll reconsider what you think you have there, but keep in mind that a lot of our members know what they're talking about. We have experienced collectors here as well as professionals and I'm sure there's going to be a consensus on this find not being what you think it is.
Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 If you could see it you would agree,i have been collecting artifacts for 30 years and have never seen anything like it.it is something to look at it in your hand because it is undeniable.
Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 This is a back shot, you can see its feet,i know you say this isnt what a fossil looks like, but i think you may have just seen a first.im not hard headed it is just undeniable when you hold it and look at it.
Cris Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Your photos really aren't bad. You've covered all the angles, most are in focus. We're seeing quartzite, not fossil. Here's a pic of a piece that shows the layering like yours, but this one has been rounded a lot more from water than yours has.LINKIf the piece of quartzite wasn't so rounded, you'd see the same or similar layering, little humps and valleys, like on the piece that you posted.
Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 This is bottom view, does quartzite look like this? I will take it to college of the ozarks in the morn and see what they say and i will let you all know. Thanks for all of your time

I will take it to college of the ozarks in the morn and see what they say and i will let you all know. Thanks for all of your time Rocks can develop all sorts of interesting cracks that can look like cracked eggshell if the rock is relatively rounded. They fool many, many people. We get fossil "eggs" posted here multiple times a week by people adamant that what they have absolutely IS an egg. 99% of them are just some interesting rock like what yours appears to be.
Taylor67 Posted August 13, 2015 Author Posted August 13, 2015 Just to let you all know,i am as happy as can be,because i have shown it to 30 people or more and they all say the same,i am not to proud to admit when im wrong but i think i have something that will really make people amazed.i have had this for a little over a year and have been getting all the feedback i can but tomorrow i will put it under the microscope.you really have to see it to believe it.
Rustdee Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 You also have not mentioned where you found this rock. If you found it in Taney county or in that area of the state I am seeing that the geologic map has Ordovician rock there which means you are very unlikely to find reptile fossils because that rock is much too old to contain them. Also don't let this deter you there are certainly wonderful fossils in your area.
