Magoo30 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Hello everyone! I'm here on behalf of my 4 year old son who is very much into paleontology, he loves to fossil hunt! I'm interested in learning of places to take him to fossil hunt that are in our surrounding area which is NYC. I have taken him to big brook and Ramanessin creek where he found lots of teeth and Belemnites, I'm not sure of any other places around here where I could bring him other than maybe trilobite mountain, can someone give me alittle more info and tips about going there? Also is it a safe place to take a 4 year old ? I was hoping to surprise him this weekend with a trip there Thank You!

Magoo30 Posted September 17, 2015 Author Posted September 17, 2015 Thanks for sharing, it looks like place he would enjoy
RickNC Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Penn Dixie is a good time. I enjoyed it even though I was way out of my comfort zone fossil collecting like that.
njfossilhunter Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 (edited) Welcome to the forum...I do trips to Big Brook and surrounding brooks a lot in Monmouth County NJ and it's very kid friendly. If you google Big Brook you will come up with many results and pictures of the Brook after you look them over and would like to join us on one of the trips either post it here or send me a private message and I will let you know when we are doing another trip..matter of fact ...We have one coming up on October 3rd with the DVPS.(Delware Valley Paleontology Society) and I just went on a Big Brook trip with Carl from the AMNH (American Museum of Natural History) in New York City.. Plus we set up trip with Forum members as well. Tony Edited September 17, 2015 by njfossilhunter TonyThe Brooks Are Like A Box Of Chocolates,,,, You Never Know What You'll Find. Fossildude19 Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Welcome to the Forum from Connecticut. You could check the previous posts on the forum for Trilobite Mountain. I have understood from others that the New Jersey side of the mountain, (known as Trilobite Ridge) is more productive. Many kid friendly places upstate. Do some googling, or searching on here. If you don't mind a couple of hours driving, that is. This Website has allot of information, but the info is very old,..and is not very accurate, any longer. It is a good place to begin your research. Googling key words can be productive, as well. Good luck, and feel free to ask more questions. Welcome again. Magoo30 Posted September 18, 2015 Author Posted September 18, 2015 I would definitely like to take him back to big brook, he had a blast and found lots of stuff!
erose Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Join the New York Paleontological Society. They meet monthly at The American Museum of Natural History and they go on field trips to places that are often kid friendly. My daughter started at about that age when I was with the club. Penn Dixie is excellent for kids since it is safe and the fossils are abundant. But that is also a long haul from NYC to the other end of the state. Make it a full weekend event stopping on the way in Ithaca at the Museum of the Earth and then pop up to Niagara Falls when all the way out their. Along the way there would be many possibilities for collecting but you will have to do a little research as my memory has faded. Have fun! 1
