Megaladonna Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 Not a fossil, sorry about that. I think I found a meteorite what do you think? Thanks guys Megaladonna
ZiggieCie Posted September 19, 2015 Posted September 19, 2015 I hope it's a meteorite for you. Is the lighter stone piece embedded in it? I don't think that meteorites are conglomerate's. BUT I am no expert in this. 1
Megaladonna Posted September 19, 2015 Author Posted September 19, 2015 I just took the lighter stone off,,, no, not embedded, it's gorgeous what ever this it.
abyssunder Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Coral, would be my guess. 1 " We are not separate and independent entities, but like links in a chain, and we could not by any means be what we are without those who went before us and showed us the way. " Thomas Mann My Library
FLINTandBONE Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 There are stony meteorites and they are harder to identify but generally the ones with fingerprinting and pock marks are nickel iron meteorites. Is it metallic? Try holding a magnet to it. 1
ynot Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) Looks more like a terrestrial iron- Hematite or maybe Magnetite. Try a streak test on it, Hematite will leave a red streak and Magnetite should leave a dark grey one. This is done by dragging the edge of the stone over an unglazed tile. The underside of a toilet lid will work. Tony PS Magnetite is magnetic and sometimes Hematite will also exhibit magnetism. Edited September 20, 2015 by ynot 1
Megaladonna Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 Ynot, Y-yes I think you are on to something. My stone left a red streak, so Hematite it is. I also have a very similar looking stone, that I found in Malaga Spain. This one left a grey streak assuming it is Magnetite. Wonderful, thank you for the tip Megaladonna 1
ynot Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) There are a lot of minerals that will leave a grayish streak. To further explore this -- is the stone "heavy" for its size? If not then possibly a volcanic. Does a magnet stick to it? If not then I would guess that it is an iron oxide of some sort. Tony Edited September 20, 2015 by ynot
Megaladonna Posted September 20, 2015 Author Posted September 20, 2015 So I did the magnet test... The smaller stone has no pull, but the big stone from Malaga has a strong pull. Also the stone from Malaga is heavy.
ynot Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Then I would call it Magnetite! Nice find! To see what a Magnetite crystal looks like take a look at My string "Some rocks from My collection- not fossils" in "Rocks and Minerals"(bottom of TFF home page). Tony
