Found this in a large creek in Southern Illinois when I was a kid. My daughter was asking me about it last night. I've always thought it looked peculiar, so I told her I would ask around about it. It's got several shell prints in it that I can see, and is obviously not the whole piece. The circular aspect of it is interesting to me, but I'll leave that up to you experts to decide. Thanks for looking!

Welcome to the Forum. :)

Unfortunately, the pictures are quite small.

I cannot make out any detail.

Also, what size is the item?

My first thought was that it could be a gastropod or goniatite imprint.

I will reserve my final opinion pending further, larger detailed pictures.

Thank you for the quick reply. The piece is slightly larger than my hand altogether. I'll try to post larger pics.

Much better.

Thanks for the new pics.

The size I think nixes out the gastropod/goniatite idea.

Maybe the remains of an eroded sponge?

Not sure. Hope others will chime in here.

Brightened and cropped and rotated your pics a bit.

My guess would be a stromatoporoid. Is possible to show pictures from the opposite side of the specimen?
