This has this beginner baffled...

I found this near Skidaway Island, which was once home to a 20 ft sloth so I believe the geology would be Holocene and Pleistocene. When hunting fossils, I pick up anything black that doesn't look like a shell. I thought this was a piece of iron, then after washing thought it might be bone. After looking at it with a loupe, I am totally confused. I also found a couple other pieces that I believe to be bone. Thanks for any help.

Sorry for the inverted photos...not sure what happened.

Maybe someone else will weigh in on this.

Looks to be Iron based melted mineral result. Slag could be, I agree with Tim.

How much iron would be in slag? it does attract a little to a very strong magnet. I think y'all are probably spot on with this I'd after looking at slag pics.

It's slag, I agree with everyone else.

The amount of iron?

That's difficult to answer from my perspective, but it's not much, as shown by the fact that you need a very strong magnet to attract it.

Slag is the lighter impurities that separate from the iron; there is very little metal in it.

That would also account for the lighter weight of this object...thanks to all for sharing their knowledge.
