tmaier
When I find bones of that shape, I call them "toe bones". Now a proper vertebratologist will come along and tell me how very wrong I am.

FossilDudeCO
Haha! that is about as far as I got as well! I am perfectly fine calling it a "toe bone" as well.
FossilDudeCO
Deer toe bone Proximal Phalanx?
digit
I'd say so, the medial phalanx is shorter and stubbier. It should be no surprise that Harry has some fantastic images on the forum to use for comparison: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/gallery/image/22055-deer-phalanges/ Cheers. -Ken
FossilDudeCO
Ah thank you Ken! I came across that image on a google search actually!
digit
Yup. TFF is so image rich that many Google image searches lead you right back to here. Toe bones (phalanges) tend to be extra dense and sturdy so they seem to preferentially fossilize well. Haven't found a deer toe yet but I do have a camel toe. Cheers. -Ken
FossilDudeCO
A camel toe? very nice! No camel material for me this trip! Maybe in the fall I have a couple of small camel teeth from South Dakota though! Edited April 27, 2016 by FossilDudeCO
