Mikebailey42
I was near the pier in Manteo, NC when I found this. It looks tooth-like to me, but I'm not sure. I know the OBX are not always a fossil hot spot, but I figured I'd ask here! Thanks!

hokiehunter
I believe it is a worn fulgurite.
sixgill pete
I believe it is a worn fulgurite. That is a good possibility as there are no surface fossiliferous deposits in the Roanoke Island area. (Manteo is on Roanoke Island) The island must be crossed via HWY 64 to get to the outer banks. It is home of the Lost Colony. I have read that there are very deep deposits of the Oligocene River Bend Formation deep under the Pamlico Sound just to the south. Mikebailey42
Apologies, it was the pier in Rodanthe, not Manteo. I'm geographically challenged....
sixgill pete
Apologies, it was the pier in Rodanthe, not Manteo. I'm geographically challenged.... No need to apologize. The Rodanthe area is also not known as being fossiliferous, but occasionally things are found, especially to the north of there near Oregon Inlet. That area, Hatteras Island is my second favorite part of the outer banks. Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras are great spots and world class fishing. I hope you enjoyed your stay. Did you make a trip to Ocracoke while you were there? FWIW, I've been coming here for 20 years and I've never seen such nice shells washing up on shore. Nothing exotic, but lots of really nice scallop and other kinds of shells. And this thing! hokiehunter
Rodanthe.... I'll double down on fulgurite. I've found lots of them from that area south over the years. I do know of a couple decent fossil crabs and a piece of walrus jaw Ocracoke a few years ago. http://villagecraftsmen.blogspot.com/2011/04/calling-all-paleontologists.html

Kane
I can't really say if this is fulgurite, but I'm not seeing enough detail to grant me confidence in saying this is a fossil It looks like it could be a very weathered fossil (like a rugose coral), but I have my doubts given the lack of any further identifying details in the specimen. ...How to Philosophize with a Hammer
