I'm doubting my initial thought that this is a leaf impression.  It very much resembles some bark imprint images I have seen, but some of the other visual characteristics are misleading.  Any thoughts?

Still looks like some sort of fern pinnule to me.

Looks like a negative impression of a sporagia bearing fern on top of a branch.
