It is hollow

I can confirm, this is, in fact, a bead;)

I'm thinking a rubber of some sort. I found a red plastic bead looking through microfossil material yesterday, they seem to find their way into everything.

I think WhodamanHD is correct with a modern rubber bead.

its pretty heavy

Some rubber can be "heavy".

If not rubber, it still looks like a modern piece.

The way it hollows in the center (concaves) shows it wasn't drilled out like a hand made ceramic or stone bead. Definitely produced in some type of press mold. I'd go with perhaps a vulcanized rubber.
