A complete lower Somniosus is indeed very difficult to find here...

I found it yesterday , and I was very satisfied :)

To bad you didnt find it this month. well guess thats probably last months winner :P
They should be eligible for the month in which they come into possession, [...] Since some pretty cool fossils may need extensive preparation, I think that "possession" should mean "in its finished form".

That was from the Discussion of this topic in the suggestions forum... I think I would have to agree about the extensive prepping? (Unless of course you WAIT to prep it...) maybe you have to finish prepping it within that month or the next month? Hm...

Or are we doing it "find-as-is"?

In my case its "once I get around to prepping" a given specimen since I'm generally backlogged and like to work more or less in chronological order of discovery so I can keep my monthly reports coming out in order. I wish I had taken before pics to go along with these after prep pics. It was hard to tell the condition and completeness of the crabs since they were mostly ensconced in matrix with just a few bumps exposed here and a few legs eroded in section there......

Don't worry, bigD. You'll probably have your Find of the Month in the next few days. We may find it out in the Jungle of Gigantism. (You need to order a case of SnoopyDan-cer from tracer. I hear it helps you prep faster than 5-Hour Red Cow.) Got to go start packing for the expedition....

I found this Cretodus tooth about 3 weeks ago... It is the best fossil I've ever found by far, not only because of the size, but the perfect preservation... absolutely beautiful. The pics do'nt do it justice.

I'm no expert, but I understand that the find is quite rare due to the species and size...and condition.

A little background :

I found this tooth in my usual favorite spot for hunting teeth...at the Eagle Ford Shale / Austin Chalk contact point which is exposed south of Dallas at the bottom of a ' road cut cliff '. It is always dangerous to dig here because of the unstable chalk boulders that overhang above you as you nervously look for cretaceous treasures. Each time I go there are new boulders lying at the bottom that were'nt there before.

Well, this time I drove by, not intending to do any fossil hunting...and it looked like the whole cliff face had collapsed !

I thought to myself this is a wonderful opportunity to see what has been exposed...I was not dissapointed ! I did'nt have much time, but I got up there and looked around finding a chalk rock the size of a grapefruit with the tip of a tooth sticking out. I figured it was a nice sized tooth, or piece of a tooth. I took it home and threw it in a bucket of water for a couple days to soften the chalk. I took the rock fishing with me so that I could work on carving the chalk away, and free whatever was inside while waiting on the fish to bite. I was astounded when this tooth was exposed !

I know there are probably a lot of fossils on this site that make this find pale in comparison... but I'm excited about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot in the fossil of the month section. lol Thanks for checking it out ! click on the pics for full size...

Great finds everyone!

I guess this one won't count since I found it in July, but it's my best this summer by far.
