Fossilized bone

Hollow bone. Looks fossilized. Did the burn test just to make sure no burnt hair smell at all. I thought only birds had hollow bones, any ideas??

It looks pretty thin walled. What makes you feel it's not avian?

I guess the size is throwing me off a bit. Thought it was a bit big for a Eagle or osprey or hawk. Blue heron I think is to small as well. It’s 4 inches long by 1 inch wide

What are the measurements?   

Unless that is a toothbrush for giants, I'm guessing this is small enough to come from any number of birds.   

The lack of completeness of this will probably hamper the ID attempts, so getting measurements would be the next helpful thing you could do for us.

I think there are very large bird fossils from that area. He would know.

Dwarfs a herring gull.

Hollowness is not a characteristic confined to birds. Fossil bones often rot on the interior before being "fossilized". Not saying this isn't a bird bone though of course.

Took a look at the herring gull skeleton. Size comparison the upper leg of the herring would be close to length but it looks like the herring bones have a crease that runs along them. This fossil that we have seems more circular and a bit larger at one end versus the other

Wow ! All I have for reference is a wing. The legs are that much more robust ?

No wonder Pterosaurs out sized birds.

Rockwood gonna go out on a limb here, came across a article from a 2014 Charleston History museum had tucked away a skeleton of a very large bird discovered back in 1983 when they did a upgrade at the airport. Someone recently just discovered it tucked away in a drawl in the Museum! 

They are calling it Pelagornis sandersi. I have not seen any pics or info on the skeleton of this large bird but it would fit into the chandler bridge formation time would I not?!? Regardless we are very intrigued by this large hollow bone!!

If it is as thin-walled as it seems in the pictures, it is surely avian. Pretty hard to ID it beyond that, but it was a large, robust bird (think turkey drumstick).
